Fabric Drum Lampshade Workshop

This is a beginner workshop to learn the art of lampshade making.  You will leave with your own unique drum lampshade.  You can choose from three sizes of lampshades.  Small - 20 cm diameter, Medium - 30 cm and Large - 40 cm.  Our shades can be used on a variety of lamp bases, UK,EU and NA (harp/finial) and table, floor and pendant lamps.

 You will be instructed on how to apply the PVC to get the best of your material, how to attach the rings and create neat rolled edges (no glue or sewing) and other tips, tricks and techniques.  Following this class, you will be ready to attend an advanced class or purchase supplies to make another lampshade on your own.

 Date & Time:   Thursday, October 23, 2025, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.  or Sunday, November 16th, 2025, 1:00 - 3:30 p.m.

 Location:  Ottawa School of Art, Orleans Campus,  Sculpture Studio (1st floor of Shenkman Arts Centre) 245 Centrum Blvd. Orléans, ON

Cost:  $ 90 - 100 (depending on size of lampshade chosen)

Registration:  Book in advance, as there are a limited number of spaces for this workshop (minimum four, maximum six participants). We require full payment in advance to secure your booking.

Included:  The workshop fee includes PVC, rings, tools and supplies to make a drum lampshade.  

Not Included:  Fabric for your lampshade is not included in the workshop price.

What you need to bring: (See 1 & 2 below)

Small (20 cm lampshade) - 75cm X 25cm / 30 inch X 10 inch piece of fabric

Medium (30 cm lampshade) - 106 cm X 28 cm /42.4 inches X 11.2 inches

Large (40 cm lampshade)  - 137 cm X 32 cm /54.8 inches X 12.8 inches

o   Note: if the pattern you pick has a larger repeat design bring a larger panel so you can explore your options to optimize the design on your shade.

You may purchase additional kits from the instructor at the end of the workshop.

Cancellations:  If you are unable to attend your class, please let us know as soon as possible.  Cancellations made up to 7 days before the class will receive a full refund.  Cancellations made within 7 days, or failure to show up for your class, will not be eligible for a refund. In any circumstance where a class is cancelled by Oatcake Supply Company, we will attempt to contact you in advance as soon as possible to either reschedule or offer a full refund, as you prefer.

 (1) Your fabric should be a light to medium weight cotton, linen or polyester cotton. Fabrics with very loose weave, stretch, uneven or shinny surfaces are not suitable. Drapery fabric is the best. Not upholstery.  Also, if you have a fabric that has a distinct top and bottom to the design you should know in advance of the workshop what lamp you will be attaching it to.  It makes a difference on how you position the rings.
