Fabrics with very loose weave, stretch, uneven or shinny surfaces are not suitable. Drapery fabric is the best. Not upholstery.  Also, if you have a fabric that has a distinct top and bottom to the design you should know in advance of the workshop what lamp you will be attaching it to.  It makes a difference on how you position the rings.
